On November 1, 2024, the Taiwan Academy of Japan Studies and the Master’s Program in Japan Studies at National Chengchi University (NCCU) co-hosted the "21st Century Asia Outlook Forum" at the GIS NTU Convention Center. The forum focused on pivotal issues such as democracy, technology diplomacy, and Taiwan-Japan relations. Distinguished guests included Legislator Chen Kuan-ting, Dean Lien Hung-yi of the College of International Affairs at NCCU, President Lien Hsien-ming of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER), and Akio Yaita, Chairperson of the Indo-Pacific Strategy Think Tank. The forum featured keynote speeches from three renowned experts. First, Akira Amari, a key architect of Japan’s semiconductor strategy, emphasized the vital cooperation between Taiwan and Japan in the semiconductor supply chain. Professor Hiroshi Nakanishi of Kyoto University identified three major 21st-century challenges: the environment, the information society, and population migration. Professor Shunsuke Managi of Kyushu University analyzed economic growth indicators under the framework of sustainable development, highlighting the potential for technological collaboration. Furthermore, the roundtable discussion centered on ESG and economic security. In his closing remarks, Director Shih-Hui Li of the Japan Studies Program concluded that the semiconductor supply chain is a crucial pillar of Taiwan-Japan economic security cooperation, calling for deeper engagement in policy dialogue and talent cultivation.
